BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS |
Editor's note: the following is transcribed directly from a document on
file at the Vancouver Art Gallery Library Archives, although of course that
document does not include the hyperlinks to artist biographies. Although
the document is not dated, vital statistics information is noted as late
as 1974. The author of the document is not given. Textual inconsistencies in
the original typewritten document have been retained, such as titles of
artworks being randomly either in parentheses or not. It turned out that the person who compiled this list did it exclusively from the "ARTS" section of all of the exhibition catalogues. Anyone who was listed only in the "CRAFTS" section of the exhibition catalogues was not included in this list, which is an unfortunate oversight. In the list below DATES refers to birth or death dates, EXHIBITIONS refers to range of exhibition dates. Vital statistics information is given as listed in the original document, although for artists with biographies in BC ARTISTS more comprehensive vital statistics are often provided. |
Exhibition catalogs, 1910 - 1941, B.C. Archives collection. Photocopies, Vancouver Public Library, Fine Arts and Music Division.
Throughout the years 1910-41 there are numerous printing errors, also various forms of entries for one artist's name.
The catalogs generally listed married women with the husband's initials - Mrs. A.G. Blank, for Mrs. Albert George Blank, not Mrs. Ann Grace Blank. The entry, Mrs. Ada Betty Blank usually, but not always, indicated a widow.
The Victoria and British Columbia directories prior to 1935 listed only "the head of the house" - wives, sons, and daughters were not listed, with the occasional exception for teachers, nurses, artists, or other "professions". A single woman, or widow, who was sole occupant of a house was listed.
The B.C. Society of Fine Arts / B.C. Society of Artists, and the Vancouver Art Gallery's annual exhibition of B.C. artists gave more definite identity in their catalogs, and these have been used whenever available for I.A.C.S. members who also exhibited in these two annual exhibitions.
The microfilm of the B.C. Archives Index of Newspapers has been checked - and more accurate details of some names were found, also a number of obituaries.
Where surname only, or surname with initials is all that could be traced, the subject or title of paintings are given to help identify the artist. Every name was checked in the city directories, but many were not listed, though a 5-year span was checked. In other cases several listings of a name prevented accurate, or probably identity.
Biographies of some of the earlier I.A.C.S. artists are in "Early Painters and Engravers in Canada" by J. Russell Harper - Harper is noted. Royal Academy exhibitions 1796 - 1904, Algernon Graves, has been checked, and noted Graves.
The dates...1913-1917 indicate the first and last years the artist exhibited. Entries, with each year noted, are in the index of Canadian artists, Fine Arts & Music Division, Vancouver Public Library.
