James Islay Mutter exhibited in the 1945 B.C. Artists exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. He was living in Victoria.

His wife Jean exhibited with the Island Arts and Crafts Society from 1929 to 1937.

B.C. Vital Statistics on-line database provides the information that Mutter died in Victoria in 1950 at the age of 75.
