Gwen Kortright (also Kortwright) Hutton was born in Fort Macleod (East Macleod), Alberta, in April 1909. She studied art at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, winning scholarships there in 1926, 1927, and 1928, training under Arthur Lismer, J.W.G. Macdonald, Emmanuel Hahn, and others. She won a prize from the Toronto Carpet Company in 1926 and a milk poster competition there in 1927.

She exhibited work in the All Canadian exhibition in 1932.

She did further studies at the Banff School of Art, and then in Victoria. In 1933 one of her paintings was hung in the National Gallery of Canada.

She married John Lamont in 1935. The couple later had twin children.

She illustrated a book of plays for children for J.M. Dent & Sons Publishers.

She exhibited her work with the Island Arts & Crafts Society in 1938. She also had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1938. In 1941 she was living in Victoria.

She exhibited in the 1940, 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1968 annual B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery. In 1948 she was living in Okanagan Mission.

In 1945 she had two paintings in the British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

She also exhibited in Montreal in at least one annual spring exhibition of the Art Association of Montreal.

She was living in Kelowna in 1974, and died there on December 30, 1978 at the age of 69, shortly after helping to produce the book of her early sketches.
