BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS |
She exhibited from 1926 to 1936 with the Island Arts & Crafts Society.
Editor's note: this little biography is based on 3 articles published in 1924 and 1925. In these articles, the artist is listed as Mrs. Hartley, Mrs. Clara Hartley, and Mrs. B.G. Hartley. These are likely the same person, with "B.G." being her husband's initials, and because all three are in reference to exhibitions of the Sketch Club within about a one-year period. However, it is possible (but unlikely) that the articles may refer to two Hartleys, or even three.
There are also references to Mrs. Basil S. Hartley exhibiting with the Island Arts & Crafts Society from 1918 to 1920, and Mrs. Clare Hartley exhibiting work from 1926 to 1936. Perhaps the initials "B.G." are an error for "B.S." (Basil Shakespeare Hartley). Perhaps the Hartleys lived in Victoria, Vancouver, and then Victoria again.
