PRIVATE VIEW PRECEDES SKETCH CLUB EXHIBITION

Vancouver Daily Province, November 30 1925

The private view preceding the semi-annual exhibition of the Vancouver Sketch Club was marked by the attendance of many interested guests at the club rooms, 328 (sic) Pender Street west, on Saturday, when selected pictures from the work of the past six months were on display.
In the oils section Mrs. S.E. Frame's painting of "North Arm, Burrard Inlet," stood out as a brilliant piece of color, expressing a quality of warmth and sunshine.
In contrast was Miss Margaret Lougheed's "Lily Pond" in soft greys, conveying a feeling of freshness and coolness. Miss Anne Batchelor exhibited a fine sketch of "Savary Island."

Portrait in Oil
The only portrait in oils was shown by Mrs. A.J. Pilkington, entitled "The Tired Model," a noticeable and very decorative piece of work. Mr. Stanley Tytler was represented by an interesting sketch of "Freshwater Bay."
In the water color section Mr. T.W. Fripp's "Alta Lake" stood out for its soft beauty and grandeur. A charming sketch of "Veddar (sic) River" was also shown by the same artist.
A beautiful still life study of "Poppies" by Miss Margaret Wake called for special admiration. Mrs. A. McC. Creery showed a bright sketch, "Trail at Lillooet"; Mrs. Clara Hartley's "Corne Abbey, Dorset," and other sketches, appealed particularly to visitors who know the Old Country. She also exhibited sketches of local scenes.

Old Country Sketches
Old Country sketches were also shown by Major C.B. Fowler, including "Clovelly" and "The Old Bridge, Abingdon, near Oxford."
Miss Maud Shearman's (sic) Californian sketches were well executed. A bright little scene, "Carvell Mission, California," by Mrs. H.J. Wattie, was much admired, as also were views of Tasmania by Mrs. F.J. Maw. Another sketch receiving attention was "Glacier Valley," by Mrs. S.S. Saunders.
Two decorative landscapes in gouache, by Mr. Gordon Thorne, were brilliant in effect. A clever portrait study in pencil was shown by Mr. John Scott, who also had on view two sketches in water color. Mrs. G. Shaw, a new member, exhibited a very pleasing landscape "Vancouver Island," in pastel.
Others exhibiting were Dr. Gladwin, Miss Willow Rose, Mrs. W.W. Winning, Mrs. A.K. Anderson, Mrs. Lillian Arnold, Mr. Blake Hunt, Mrs. R. Harvey, Mrs. E. Rankin, Miss E. Hope, Miss L.R. Bowhay, Miss R. Kirkpatrick, Miss D. Smith, Mrs. E Baron, Mrs. L. Gilpin, Miss A. Power, Mr. T.A. Mayne, Mr. A.M. Read, Mr. D.W. Peake.
