Ethel Annie Leather was born in Chester, England. She came to British Columbia with her husband, arriving in Victoria on May 29 1888. They moved to Cowichan, where they lived with the exception of two years spent in Sooke. In Cowichan they called their house "Mereside" which was located on Indian Road.

Leather became famous locally for horticulture, in particular growing and selling lavender. She also tied flies for fishing, and sold some of her watercolours.

She exhibited with the Island Arts and Crafts Society from 1911 to 1941.

She exhibited at the Vancouver Exhibition in 1926.

She was widowed when she died in Duncan in 1957 at the age of 95, her occupation noted as "home duties" according to B.C. Vital Statistics on-line database.
