Vivian J. Cummings was born in Plymouth, England. He attended British Royal Academy schools from July 27 1897 to July 1902.

He exhibited artwork in the Second Exhibition of the Island Arts & Crafts Society in 1911. He is noted as an Architect in the list of members.

He was married on July 7, 1915 in Victoria.

In World War One he was a gunner in the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
