Edward Goodall

September 3 1909 - September 12 1982

Island Arts and Crafts Society

Edward Goodall was born in Wells, Somerset, England in 1909.

He provided water colours and pencil sketches of British Columbia to at least one greeting card company, the Bulman Bros. B.C. Ltd. Vancouver B.C. One undated card made from a pencil sketch is titled "Mount Baker, as seen from the Lounge of the Old Charming Inn, 1420 Beach Drive, Oak Bay B.C."

Goodall exhibited his work in the 1945 British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. He was listed as a L./Corporal of the Royal Canadian Engineers at the time.

Also, per card file at Vancouver Art Gallery Library:
Island Arts and Crafts Society: 1936-41.

Sometime around 1980 Goodall produced a small pamphlet of his watercolours entitled Watercolour Scenes of Vancouver Island. The pamphlet is not dated, but text in it refers to the opening of Heritage Court in Victoria in 1968, and the brief biography of Goodall at the front of the pamphlet states that "since settling in Canada he has spent forty-five years sketching and painting British Columbia...". If the date of 1935 is taken as the time he "settled" in Canada, then the pamphlet was likely produced around 1980. Goodall died in 1982.

A Goodall Family website is maintained, including a biographical page for Edward at: http://www.goodallartists.ca/edward.htm. This web site has scores of his watercolours, pencil drawings, and pen & ink drawings illustrated.
