Mary Elliot Were
(nee Bagnall, m Robert Charles John Were)
c1871 - May 28 1951
Mary Elliot Were was born in Manchester, England. She came to Canada c1906, arrived
in BC c1921, and lived in Victoria from c1926 until her death, according to her
death certificate. Her husband died in Saanich in 1942. He was employed as a
book-keeper for Wilkinson Co. in Vancouver in 1917, residence 1957 West First Ave.
She exhibited with the Vancouver Sketch Club in 1917.
She exhibited with the Island Arts & Crafts Society from 1918 to 1923.
By 1921 the Weres were living in Victoria, Mr. Were was listed as a "Christian Science
Practitioner" living at 1600 North Hampshire Road. In 1945 Mary is listed as a widow,
living at 1320 Yates.
She died in Victoria in 1951 at the age of 80, widowed, occupation noted as "at home."
