2023 - THE YEAR IN REVIEW

25 YEARS ... 20,000 ARTISTS ... 4,200 WEB PAGES

It has been over 27 years since I started researching and collecting B.C. artist information, 25 years since I first thought of creating this web site, and 21 years since I created the first few pages for it. As of December 31 2023 the project (as posted on-line) contains 6,150+ HTM and JPG files. Not posted are vital statistic information (1,175 files), 225 directories with individual artist information (1,388 files), plus digital collections of clippings, historical photographs, original high resolution scans, info from City directories, and around two thousand digital research photographs. Altogether, there are more than 11,000 digital files related to BC Artists.

So, one might ask "what is left to do?" ... well, I could continue to transcribe BC Society of Artists exhibition catalogues from 1952 to 1967, the VAG BC Artists exhibitions from 1951 to 1968, and the Island Arts & Crafts Society from 1912 to 1941. Doing all of those would add around 45 catalogues to the project, listing perhaps another 7,000 artworks, and creating many more artist biographies. That would be a lot of work.

In the meantime, I am "rounding up" and adding loose ends of clippings, images, and bits of information as I find them in my research files. This includes artist photographs for the birthday calendar and a number of additional listings for the Greater Vancouver Art Galleries page.

SITE METRICS: for some time the website metrics program was not working, but on October 15 it was fixed. I can again determine how much usage Sim-Publishing and BC Artists is getting. In a recent 7 day period, there were 515 unique visitors, an average of 73 per day, who looked at a total of 1,164 web pages, or 2.25 page views per visitor. Each visitor averaged just over 2 minutes looking at the web pages. Thank you all for visiting!

I just re-acquired a copy of THREE HOURS LATER, a very interesting publication that was published in 1974 from a compilation of artist statements that were submitted in 1973. Although it was the first publication that I added to BC Artists once I decided to extend the project's time period up to the present day, I did a very basic data entry, just the artist's names and the link.

I went through it again, and added/updated a huge amount of information that I did not note the first time. For example, I hadn't noted where the artists lived, now everyone who provided that information has been placed. I also paid no attention to the occasional lengthy list of exhibitions noted by some of the artists. I had nowhere to "put" the information. Since then I have transcribed and compiled the Greater Vancouver Art Galleries page, and there is now a place to put any applicable information. I made quite a few updates, and added a chart listing the gallery and exhibition statistics.

A recent visitor mentioned Tippet & Cole's From Desolation to Splendour, a book that I referenced quite early into Art & Artists in Exhibition Vol 1: Vancouver 1890 - 1950. However, I had simply listed the book and briefly described its contents, I didn't compile a list of artists. I kept meaning to do so, and the mention of this book prompted me to finally list its artists. That went well, a total of 83 artists were referenced in the book, many whose work was illustrated. Surprisingly, all 83 of them were already listed in my BC Artists project ... ! If I'd listed them 20 years ago I would have had to create biography files for most of them, or new A-Z index listings. Now, 60 of the artists already have biography files, and the other 23 were already listed in the index.

Two hours of research at the Vancouver City Archives yielded a trove of information about sculptor Charles Marega and his work. The late Peggy Imredy, wife of sculptor Elek Imredy (q.v.), donated her research on Marega to the Archives. The fond includes about 700 35mm film negatives taken during her research, including photographs of many of Marega's sculptures that are otherwise relatively unknown.

Peggy did a lot of work on his biography, repeatedly stating in her work that he needed to be better recognized in Vancouver. Unfortunately she was not able to finish her work and produce a complete biography. My visit was intended to try and find references or images for Alfredo Dalfo, a sculptor and long-time assistant of Marega's. There is a record of Peggy interviewing Dalfo in 1974, but her notes only include brief references to Marega. I did find a good photograph of Dalfo in a large collection of film negatives, and ordered a high resolution scan of it.

I went through the process of standardizing the formatting of all "clippings" in artist biographies. There were too many differences from one clipping to the next. It took 4 weeks off and on to do, but was also a good opportunity to review all the other formatting and information.

Late in the year I went through all the biographies again, standardizing the formatting for exhibitions, solo or group. That was fairly straight forward, but took about one week. Most early files had a header Exhibitions, then headers for solo and group. The first header has been deleted, and if there are no solo exhibitions then that section has also been deleted. Smaller file size, a touch faster to load, less bandwidth, simpler to look at.

I finally put together a biography of photographer Stuart Thomson. He captured many important images in Vancouver's history from 1910 to 1960. I acquired a fair bit of information about him during my research into artist Maud Sherman and her family, as Thomson boarded with them for the last twenty years of his life and Maud's niece June Sherman became his business partner.

I also started a page for the Alcuin Society, who has supported so many artists with their various programs since its inception in 1965. This page was inspired by the arrival of the latest Amphora, which is a memorial issue to Robert R. Reid.

Actually, in working through all of the artist biography files in BC Artists, I realized that quite a few "clippings" were only listed in the biographies, and not also in the overall index of clippings. For the sake of consistency I've been adding them to the index as entry points to the related artist biographies. So far 120 additional clippings, and 30 years have been added to the index of publication years. The two images above show the difference from October to December 2023. I've also been making further formatting changes for ease of use.
