BC FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS On Feb. 9th I was given some catalogues and artist information from the annual BC Festival of the Arts exhibitions. The material dates from 1999 to 2002. BCFA exhibition catalogues have been very hard to find, and I still haven't seen all of them, so this was a very welcome gift. The donor hadn't found an institution that wanted the material and was about to throw it all out. Luckily they found my website and contacted me. Adding artist information is good, but rescuing it is way better! In addition to four exhibition catalogues, an exhibition guestbook, a sketchbook full of original children's artwork, and 3 VHS tapes of the digital video workshop, the collection includes six 3-ring binders stuffed full of original artist statements and CV's submitted for the 1999, 2000, and 2001 exhibitions. I have indexed all 338 artist entries at: BCFA Exhibition Binders, and listed all applicable information from the submissions into the BCA A-Z index. I have also listed the 2002 exhibition catalogue, and of the 146 artists in the show 62 were new to BC Artists. No artist will be left behind!

ISLAND ARTS & CRAFTS SOCIETY A few years ago I traded an original 1928 Palette & Chisel club exhibition catalogue for a complete set of photocopies from the annual Island Arts & Crafts exhibitions in Victoria. The exhibitions ran from 1910 to 1941, and the catalogues have been very useful reference material. I finally transcribed the first two catalogues from 1910 and 1911. It was a lot of work, but the exhibitions include a number of important early BC artists. The person that I made the trade with was working on a very focused but rather difficult collection to complete: to acquire an original copy of every exhibition catalogue that Emily Carr exhibited artwork in prior to her death. There were two paintings by Carr in the 1928 exhibition. This was the only Palette & Chisel Club exhibition catalogue that I have ever seen, either on the "market" or in a research facility. I have never seen or acquired an original Island Arts & Crafts Society exhibition catalogue, so it is safe to say that both of us were very happy with our trade. CANADIAN NATIONAL EXHIBITION The CNE held art exhibitions annually along with the rest of the exhibition. In June a friend emailed me a list of BC artists who had exhibited at the CNE during the 1930s. He compiled the list from seven catalogues in his collection. There are 93 artworks by 41 BC artists on the list. I added the information to BC ARTISTS, which resulted in one new group file for the CNE, and 10 new artist biographies, of which eight artists are newly listed in BC ARTISTS.
