BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS |
A lot of information was added to BC Artists in 2019. Additional research at the
Vancouver Art Gallery Library & Archives provided much additional content, as did the
collection of another 100 or so reference books and exhibition catalogues: 197 new web pages were created. 73 new images were added. 263 artists were added. 60 artist biographies were created. 1,334 cross-references were added. 1,973 artworks were listed from 18 transcribed catalogues. After much consideration SIM PUBLISHING decided to make BC ARTISTS free to the public via website. This was a bit of a technical challenge, as the file server requires files to be named with lower case letters, as well as all hyperlinks that are inside the actual files. The files contained in BC ARTISTS included a mix of lower and upper case file names and coding. Both challenges were resolved by means of computer programming rather than actual editing, which was a relief especially due to the large number of affected files (over 3,000). As it turned out, the programming phase also located some broken links and other errata that has been fixed. One of the programs used for this processing reported that BC ARTISTS currently has 96,150 hyperlinks ... ! Many thanks are due to Jason Vanderhill for his assistance with those issues.

Although I started collecting artist ephemera around 1990,
I made an effort to get as much as I could from 1995 to 2005,
in order to try and "capture" the art scene in Vancouver at
that time. The result was a few plastic bins full of material.
Once in a while I'd rummage through them looking for something.
I recently decided to compile all of the material relating to
individual artists into the BC Artist biography printouts. First
I merged three large binders of assorted A-Z artist material
(vital statistics, artist cards, clippings, printouts, etc.),
then began to go through the bins to collate related materials
and add them to the biography binders. I had also collated a lot of material from galleries and groups such as Harrison Galleries, Bau-Xi Galleries, Contemporary Art Gallery, Malaspina Printmakers, Dundarave Printmakers, Federation of Canadian Artists, Vancouver East Cultural Centre, and many others. A number of these have been added to BC Artists as per below, a pile of other ones is waiting to be referenced. It is time-consuming, but things are slowly getting more organized and cohesive. Work also continues on pre-1950 artists and exhibitions. Another ongoing effort is to move all AAEV support files and links into the BCA format, deleting them from AAEV as I do. This included simplifying the BCA references page, and moving links from the AAEV references page into various BCA files such as occasional papers. The original AAEV header and its six links will remain for the time being in about 2,500 files: artist biographies, clippings, exhibitions, occasional papers, etc. However, all six targets for the links have been revised to point to BCA pages, including the AAEV home page which is now a copy of the BCA home page. As well, during the past few years some reference information was duplicated in AAEV and BCA, these overlaps are being resolved during the reformatting. The ongoing goal is a compact and well organized digital project, that is matched by a well organized library and collection, all of it intended and designed as an efficient finding aid for research on the visual artists of British Columbia. |

Summary: |
118 new artists, 13 new artist biographies, 6 new BCA references,
2 new artist groups and gallery, 3 new exhibition catalogues
with 314 artworks for a total of 13,038 artworks listed in
176 transcribed catalogues, 1 new exhibition listed, 1 new image. Referencing all BC artists in H70 was an interesting exercise. 56 "new" artists were found, almost entirely pre-1900 listings from city and provincial directories that I had yet to find or go through. As well, many artists for whom I had found just a directory listing from my research received their second reference with Harper, often just the same directory listing. Harper and I had done the same research almost 50 years apart, although he certainly wasn't doing his work "on line." 74 new references to Harper were added to artists already in the BCA index or with biographies, and another 80 references were re-formatted to current style.
Adding the 1940 B.C. Artists exhibition catalogue prompted
a long over-due re-formatting of the exhibition entries in the
biographies, which have diverged into a number of different
styles: I had been listing them as "9th Annual B.C. Artists" (for example) which made sense when it was just the annual numbers. Adding the Summer and Christmas exhibition catalogues disrupted that order, so it made sense to start the listings with B.C. Artists and then the show, be it annual or seasonal. So, every artist in the 1940 exhibition had every one of their B.C. Artists links updated, which slowed things down considerably. The listings do look a lot tidier now! For two weeks I plowed through the rest of the 15 transcribed catalogues making the same formatting changes. There were lots of other updates to references and formattings and error-fixing done along the way, so it was not just an exercise in neatness. Over 800 artist files were updated in the process. With the cross-referencing of MM88 most of the major Canadian artist reference works are now listed in BC Artists, and the majority of the bibliographic listings in artist biography files are consistently formatted.
