This letter-press printed woodcut image was designed
and printed by Julius Griffiths. This was one of his later
woodcuts that he had favored for years as an artistic medium,
but then he switched to painting because it was simpler and
more direct. The Russian theme is quite interesting, as Griffith
was stationed in Russia at the end of World War Two, and on more
than one occasion had been told to quit sketching by Russian
soldiers. He actually did do work for the intelligence service
while there, but was "sworn to a 30-year long secrecy agreement"
not to talk about his experiences in Russia. This little print
provides a glimpse into that past. He has pecked out eleven
passengers and two people on the far sidewalk, in a print that
is about 3" by 5".
