Jack R.R. Drainie was born in Vancouver, and attended North Vancouver High School. He submitted artwork to the 1935 4th annual B.C. Artists' exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The artist was living in North Vancouver.

In 1942 he married Claire Paula Murray in Kamloops. Drainie's employment was noted as radio announcer, and his age 25. He went on to have a significant career as an actor and television presenter before his untimely death in Toronto at the age of 50. Orson Welles referred to Drainie as "the greatest radio actor in the world."

Notable roles included co-hosting This Hour Has Seven Days with Laurier LaPierre in 1964; the rold of Professor Hunter in Walt Disney's movie The Incredible Journey; and a one-man stage show in which he played humourist Stephen Leacock. Two Canadian awards are named in his honour. His daughter Bronwyn Drainie wrote a biography of Drainie titled Living the Part: John Drainie and the Dilemma of Canadian Stardom in 1988. Drainie died in Toronto.
