ARTICHOKE - Writings About the Visual Arts

ARTICHOKE was an interesting art publication. Paula Gustafson, the Editor, lived and worked in Vancouver. Mary-Beth Laviolette was Associate Editor in Alberta. Between them they provided coverage of the western Canadian art scene, along with the help of numerous guest authors and contributors. The magazine was published from 1989 to 2005. An editorial by Gustafson in the Summer 2005 issue noted that they had failed to get a Canada Council grant that year, which also meant no funding from the Canadian Magazine Fund. Provincially, Alberta would not fund them because one Editor was in BC, and BC would not fund them because one Editor was in Alberta where it was printed. Artichoke ceased publication in 2005 due to lack of funding, and Gustafson died from cancer in July 2006. Note: the following (incomplete) list is compiled from 13 issues in the BC Artist collection dating from Spring 1999 to Summer 2005. It is not an index to all articles in those issues.
