Apparently 400 citizens signed a letter demanding the resignation of McHugh and the "Executive who appointed him." A town hall meeting was organized and held in the lecture theatre at Emily Carr Institute, then on Granville Island. The meeting was well attended (note, the Editor was present at the meeting) and much discussion was held. Eventually all the hub-bub died down, a "permanent" Director was appointed, and life went on in the art world.

A document was issued at the time, with a position statement on one side of the paper, and a list of people who supported the statement on the other side. It is an interesting list of people involved in the arts at the turn of the millenium, and their employment is also worthy of note.

I transcribed the list of supporters, there were 211 listed. After much research, because some signatories were from back east or were not exhibiting artists, I ended up cross-referencing 142 of the 211 names into the BC Artists A - Z index pages (as well as two biography files). Of these 142 names, 30 were new to the index. A smattering of information gleaned from the list was used to update the galleries page.
