Paul Rand was born Otto Schellenberger in Bonn, Germany in 1896. He attended art school at Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany for a year. He was living in Alberta at the outbreak of World War One, and as an enemy alien he was interned until the end of the war. He arrived in Vancouver in 1926, where he took night lessons at the Art School for a number of years.

He taught at the A.O.T.S. Polytechnic School (As One That Serves) at 138 E. Cordova St. in 1937 and 1938, until the school was closed by John Kyle. He was Art Director at the Sun Printing Company for seventeen years, and then Art Director at Evergreen Press until his retirement in 1965.
