British Columbia Artist Series postcards

These postcards were issued under the title British Columbia Artist Series. None of the cards in the series has a publication date, although information printed on some of them gives information on exhibitions in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The original postcards are 3.25" high by 5.5" wide.

Artists represented in the series include Emily Carr, Nan Lawson Cheney, Bess Harris, Lawren Harris, Ronald Jackson, J.W.G. Macdonald, Marion Morham, J. Delisle Parker, Paul Rand, Charles H. Scott, Mildred Valley Thornton, and W.P. Weston. There may well be more cards in the series.

The postcards are mentioned in the Vancouver Art Gallery Bulletin, Vol. 12, No. 1, September 1944:
"An interesting step in the direction of furthering interest in the art of British Columbia is the preparation of a series of postcard reproductions of paintings by British Columbian artists, including Emily Carr, Nan Lawson Cheney, Bess Harris, Lawren Harris, Ronald Jackson, J.W.G. Macdonald, Marion A. Morham, J. Delisle Parker, Paul Rand, Chas. H. Scott, A.R.C.A., Mildred Valley Thornton and W.P. Weston, A.R.C.A. This is a co-operative venture by the artists concerned which, if successful, will, it is hoped, lead to the preparation of further series. The postcards are now on sale at the Gallery office at five cents each."

The Editor has a collection of 10 of these cards, per illustrations below (lacking Nan Cheney and Lawren Harris cards), but does not know if additional artworks were published, or additional artists included in the series. It took the Editor until 2013 to find the information noted above in the art gallery bulletin (by accident), until then no-one could say who published the cards.

Refer also to postcard to Grigsby for an example of Emily Carr using one of her own postcards for correspondence.
