"Nan Lawson Cheney"
"Mrs. Cheney, whose exhibition is to take place from March 26th to April 10th, is a comparatively recent addition to Vancouver's art colony. She studied landscape work uner Aldro Hibbert of Rockport, Mass., and portrait work with Lillias Torrence Newton, R.C.A., and Alexandre Iacovleff of The Museum School of Art Boston. Included in Mrs. Cheney's exhibition is a group of paintings of scenery in the Kootenays. Pictures of that part of British Columbia have seldom been shown in the Gallery. A private view of this exhibition will be held on Saturday, March 26th, from 3 to 5 p.m."

Vancouver Art Gallery Bulletin, November (?) 1939

"Nan Lawson Cheney has been a frequent participator in annual B.C. artists exhibitions for some years past, contributing landscapes, portraits and still life. Her present display is entirely of pastel drawings in the field of portraiture. All her subjects are men, and most of them are in uniform.
There is a good deal of verve and animation about these pictures. The artist has approached her work with sure, deliberate intention and a firm, confidant (sic) technique. She has shown particular ability in her handling of the various textures of the uniforms.
There is a fine study of a boy in a blue sweater, and "Capilano Fisherman" is a popular subject handled with unusual freedom and competence. Mrs. Cheney has a good color sense and an infallible feeling for sound design."
