BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS

Stanley (Stanislau) Ernest Brunst

c1894 - January 6 1962

Federation of Canadian Artists (Founding Member 1941)
B.C. Society of Artists (Member 1952-1962)

Stanley E. Brunst was born in Birmingham, England. He came to Canada at age eighteen and lived in Saskatoon, SK. He moved to Vancouver and became active in the local arts scene, having three solo exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery, in 1941 (watercolours), 1942 (22 pictures), and 1944 (28 pictures).

He was on a list titled "Leading Vancouver Artists," provided to the Labour Arts Guild on April 10, 1946 by the Vancouver Art Gallery to assist in the Guild's call for entries to the second annual B.C. At Work exhibition.

He exhibited in the B.C. Artists' shows at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1940 to 1950, and in the 1948 and 1949 Stanley Park in Pictures exhibitions.

In 1946 - 1947 he had work in a Federation of Canadian Artists travelling exhibition, and wrote a short statement to describe his approach to painting, "Introduction to the Modern Spirit" as well as providing some notes on his paintings in the show.

He exhibited with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts in their annual exhibitions from 1942 to 1962. Interestingly, he was invited into the first ten Society exhibitions that he had work in, prior to becoming a member.

He died in Vancouver in 1962 at the age of sixty-seven.

Clippings

"Mr. S.E. Brunst, formerly of Saskatoon, and now resident of Vancouver, is showing a collection of his recent work, which will be on view until May 10. Mr. Brunst's chosen medium is tempera. With great daring and confidence he has launched out into the mysterious and elusive realm of the abstract with rather startling results. Pattern is the supreme concern, and flat, bold color. The juxtaposition of form has been intriguing to the exclusions of other important elements. This work is experimental, courageous, and interesting."
