Boyd was married to Joan Wright, also an artist.
He studied art at the Vancouver School of Art under B.C. Binning and Jack Shadbolt, and graduated from the school in 1947 with honours in drawing and painting.
He exhibited his work in the 1945 British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
He had work in the 1948 Stanley Park in Pictures exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. His painting won the Second Prize of $75.00.
He exhibited more work with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts in their 39th Annual Exhibition in 1949. Later that year he submitted four drawings to the B.C. Graphic exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, two of them were selected for the exhibition. He was living in Vancouver at the time.
Boyd worked in oils, water colours, and inks, and was interested in landscapes. He taught art for the Vancouver Public Schools from 1948 to 1956, and then taught drawing and anatomy at the Vancouver School of Art beginning in 1956. He was also a Director of children's art classes at the school. He completed architectural commissions at the Vancouver airport and for the B.C. Telephone company, working in aluminum, glass and clay.
Boyd died in 2007.
