He exhibited his work in the 1948 and 1949 Stanley Park in Pictures exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery, and in the B.C. Artists' exhibitions from 1946 to 1953.
In the late 1950s to early 1960s Colton edited Perception, the journal of the B.C. Teachers' Federation, and illustrated a number of the front covers for The B.C. Teacher.
He exhibited with the BCSFA from 1950 to 1960. He was invited to exhibit in 1950 and 1951.
The 1990 IMAGES AND OBJECTS VIII catalogue notes that he had a solo exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery in 1987, and several pieces were purchased for their permanent collection. The artist was living in Langley in 1990.
Colton died June 7, 2012.
