B.C. TEACHERS' FEDERATION (1917 - current)
"The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), established in 1917, is the
union of professionals representing 45,000 public school teachers in the province
of British Columbia, Canada. All public school teachers belong to the BCTF and
their local teachers' association." (From the BCTF web site, 2020)
The BCTF has been representing the school teachers of the Province for more than
100 years. Prominent members of the Federation included
Ira Dilworth, a friend of Emily Carr's, and noted
author and school principal Ruiter Stinson Sherman.

For many years the Federation published a journal titled B.C. TEACHER,
which included information for teachers, instructional articles, and essays
by noted teachers like Charles H. Scott. It also
printed a range of advertisements that included school equipment, teaching
supplies, and new books and publications for teaching. For example,
J.M. Dent & Sons advertised all of their school publications
in it, and early copies provided the first information about titles of a number of
books written by R.S. Sherman.
In 1963 the Federation held a mural competition for the Scarfe Building at UBC. The
competition closed on June 30, 1963, and was awarded to Paul Deggan (q.v.)
