BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTISTS

DONORS

"As the economics of publishing become harder, works of this magnitude are likely to become impossible without a degree of patronage."
Introduction, Dictionary of British Artists 1880 - 1940, published 1976

The following is a compilation of information about people who have donated to the project. Thank you all, Gary Sim.

DIAMOND DONORS

Dr. Yosef Wosk O.C.
Rabbi, author, philanthropist
Vancouver
Yosef Wosk website
2019
Yosef Wosk was an early supporter of my project, purchasing a copy and upgrades as they became available. He also provided a publishing grant for BC Artists as soon as he heard that I had posted the project on-line for free public access. He has been a significant contributor to many community and arts related events and projects.
Dr. Charles Christie Hill O.C.
Curator Emeritus, National Gallery
Ottawa ON
2019, 2020
Charlie Hill was another early supporter of my project, purchasing a copy and upgrades as they became available. He donated to BC Artists for two years after it was posted online. He has also been very helpful with my research questions over the years, and in turn I have been his Western art history correspondent and sleuth. Charlie also helped curate the bibliographic exhibition of my donations to the National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives in 2018.

SILVER DONORS

Andrew Metten, P.Eng.
Senior Partner
Bush Bohlman & Partners
Vancouver
Bush Bohlman website
2024
I worked with Andrew Metten, and with other employees of Bush Bohlman, a large structural engineering firm, over many years during my work in architecture. All of them were great to work with. Andrew has been interested in my work for some time, and last year after he viewed my exhibition at the West End Community Centre I had the opportunity to give him two short videos that I took during the 7.8 earthquake in Haida Gwaii in 2012.
Carol Sawyer
Visual artist, singer
Vancouver
Carol Sawyer website
2017
Vancouver artist Carol Sawyer came by for a short interview in preparation for her solo Brettschneider exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, and ended up staying for four hours. She gave me an honorarium from her exhibition grant by way of thanks, and put a very nice acknowledgment to me in The Natalie Brettschneider Archive exhibition catalogue, page 106. She was also kind enough to give me a nicely inscribed copy of the book.

BRONZE DONORS

Bob MacIntyre
Retired Curator, art historian
Burnaby
2024
In addition to all of the help noted below in the Diamond In-Kind Donor section, Bob also promptly donated to the project after I emailed about the new "Support BC Artists" page. He became the first Bronze donor, and the first person to be in two Donor categories.
Dr. Patrick Dunae
Writer, historian, archivist
Victoria
Clio Media, The Homeroom
VI History
2024
Dr. Patrick Dunae has been supporting the BC Artists project for a long time, in a variety of ways. In addition to his early help many years ago putting me in touch with people like Dr. Anthony Rogers, and posting my early articles online, Patrick has been actively doing research on BC Artists in parallel with my work. In the past couple of years he has provided a lot of information on Robert H. Savery, Charles Dudley Gaitskell, Earl Winton Clarke, Frank G. Bass, and Max Maynard. Not all of the information is added to BCA at this point.

DIAMOND IN-KIND DONORS

Renee Alexander
Calligrapher
North Vancouver
Renee Studio
Renee first contacted me years ago when she found out about BC Artists, both of her parents had been artists (R.S. Alexander and Irene Catelle Porter). She later donated a significant collection of material from her parent's collection. I added as much information from it as I could, and in turn donated the collection to the Library & Archives at Emily Carr University of Art & Design, Vancouver.
Angela Clarke, PhD
Curator, Il Museo
Vancouver
Italian Cultural Centre
I met Angela at Il Museo in the Italian Cultural Centre in relation to sculptor Charles Marega. Subsequently we exchanged information about another Italian sculptor, Alfredo Dalfo. When Angela found out about my BC Artists project she put together and gave me a thick binder full of Il Museo exhibition catalogues and club cards to add to BC Artists.
Mrs. Joan Dendys
Sherman family neighbour
Vancouver
The late Joan Dendys was a close neighbour to the Sherman family in East Vancouver, and donated a large collection of Maud Rees Sherman artwork and ephemera to me in 1998.
Mrs. Mary Gray
Author
North Vancouver
Mary is Renee Alexander's sister, she contacted me a few years ago in relation to an art folio titled The Savary Pudding, and invited me to come over and look at it. I did so, and after the review and a nice lunch, she gave me the entire folio. I photographed the collection, transcribed much of the text, and posted an extended web page. When I was done, I donated the collection to the University of Victoria Library and Archives.
Bob MacIntyre
Retired Curator, art historian
Burnaby
Bob is a very keen supporter of the arts, and spent a long professional career in art galleries. He has been continuously supportive of BC Artists for many years. During his tenure at the Burnaby Art Gallery he provided numerous exhibition catalogues for me to add to BC Artists, curated and hung three solo exhibitions from my own art collection (two of my artwork, and one of Maud Sherman's), and kept coming up with interesting art ephemera for me, for example a 100-year old art framing label. He probably has the largest private collection of my limited edition prints.
Yolanda Olivotto
Curator
Victoria
Victoria curator Yolanda Olivotto was the Visual Arts Program Manager for the BC Festival of the Arts for three years, and gave me a large collection of festival material and catalogues from 1999 - 2001. I am looking for a library or archives who would like this to be donated to them.
