Henry George Crumplin (Harry)

May 27 1885 - January 1 1953

B.C. Society of Fine Arts (Hon. Secretary 1952)

Henry George Crumplin was born in England, and came to Vancouver around 1909. He was an early exhibitor in Vancouver, having work in the 1916 B.C. Society of Fine Arts annual exhibition, and he continued to show his work for many years, up until 1952.

He exhibited work in the 1944 and 1945 British Columbia At Work exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The "Greenhill Park" was a Second World War Victory ship, built in 1944 at Burrard Dry Docks, that exploded and burned at CPR Pier B in Vancouver harbour on March 6 1945. Eight people were killed in the blast, which broke windows throughout downtown Vancouver. The subsequent fire on the ship took fourteen hours to extinguish.

The artist was living in Vancouver in 1945. Crumplin exhibited three paintings in the 1948 Stanley Park in Pictures exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, although the list of exhibitors gives one listing for H.T. Crumplin, probably a typo.

He exhibited artwork in the B.C. Artists' exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1944 to 1952.

He exhibited artwork with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts from 1950 - 1952

He had a solo exhibition at the VAG in 1950.

Crumplin died in Vancouver in 1953 at the age of 67, according to B.C. Vital Statistics on-line. His occupation was noted as "Warehouse Manager - Liquor Control Board, Prov. Gov't."

Clippings

"H. Crumplin has one of the best little "bits" - No 88 (?) "Old Country Scene" - that we remember to have seen. It is far superior to his "Fishing Boats", No. 86 (?)."

"Besides the prize winners there are a considerable number of artists contributing really inspired paintings to thie year's display. These include H.G. Crumplin, who shows a very fine landscape "The Open Park" and an ambitious night scene of "Theatre Under the Stars"."
