Canadian Expeditionary Force (World War One)
Atelier Sketch Club (Member)

Arthur Evans Shearman was born in Brantford in 1892, the son of a Methodist family. He was a teacher by trade, and came from a family that had many teachers and artists among its ranks. He was related to R.S. Sherman and Maud Sherman, as well as to Eustace Shearman, Vancouver's weatherman from 1918 to 1948. Shearman's father, of the same name, was a carriage painter by trade, working for Armstrong's Carriage works in Gastown painting "fancy" carriages. His father also designed the B.C. Mountaineering Club logo in 1907, still in use.

Shearman served overseas in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War One, enlisting with his cousins Tom Shearman and Walter Camdon Sherman. His "Particulars of Recruit" for the 68th Depot Battery, C.E.F., noted that he was a school-teacher living at 2269 6th Ave. W., Vancouver. His "description on calling up" noted that he was 5 ft. 5-1/2 ins. of height, of medium complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. He also had "small scar 1" above inner end of right eyebrow. Small scar just above left eye-brow." His medical category was A.2.

Shearman exhibited work in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1945 to 1949, and in 1951.

Shearman was a member of the Atelier Sketch Club, a group formed by art students taking Evening Classes at the Vancouver School of Art.

He exhibited in the 1946 and 1948 Atelier Club Annual Exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

He later exhibited with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts in 1952 and 1953.

Shearman died in Vancouver in 1977.
