A Curator in Victoria |
Why do I list Hilda Vincent Foster as an artist
who painted on Savary Island? |
Foster exhibited artwork with Savary Island titles at the Vancouver Art Gallery
in 1938 and 1939 with The Women Sketch Hunters of Alberta and the Edmonton Art Group. |
A woman in Vancouver |
Can I help with information about a pencil portrait of the woman's mother
drawn by E.J. Hughes in 1935? |
I put her in touch with Hughes' biographer Robert Amos in Victoria, and
also offered my advice on possibly re-matting and re-framing the portrait. Also found information
about the time and place where Hughes and the sitter would have met. |

Have I ever seen two postcards (images provided) in the B.C.
Artist Series of postcards that were published in the early 1940s, because you don't have them listed? |
No, I had only seen 10 of the 12 postcards mentioned in a 1944 Vancouver Art
Gallery Bulletin. Scans of the missing two postcards were sent to me and added to the web page. |

Do I have any more information on artist Stewart Babcock than I have listed
in the BC Artist A to Z index? |
I did some online research, and discovered that he had passed away in 2024.
I updated his listing, and added his memorial web page to my printout of BC Artists. |
A collector in the Gulf Islands |
Do I have a current contact at the National Gallery
of Canada regarding possible donations? |
No, not at this time. All my contacts there have retired. |
A woman in South Carolina |
She has a painting signed Frank Cherry. Do I know anything about him, and
is he related to E.J. Cherry who is listed in BC Artists? |
Yes and no. A small amount of information is provided in a 1919
article that I transcribed, in which the two artists are mentioned
as being related, but I was otherwise unable to find out more about how they were related, or
about Frank Cherry. |
A woman in Victoria |
She recently bought a painting signed Mary Grant Sheppard.
Do I have any more information about Sheppard than I have listed in her brief biography? |
Yes. I went through exhibition catalogues of the Island
Arts & Crafts Society from 1929 to 1941 and listed 35 artworks that Sheppard exhibited in
oils, watercolours, and black & white. I also found her marriage certificate and her husband's death
certificate online, and updated her biography. |

Do I know if photographer Harry Upperton Knight exhibited
work in the 8th Annual Salon of Fine Art and Pictorial Photography in New
Westminster, 1928? |
No. I had the catalogue in my collection but donated it to the
National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives. I had only listed the paintings in the exhibition catalogue. |

Would I like to purchase the pamphlet U.B.C. Panorama published in
1945 by A.G. Bulhak? |
Yes. I purchased the publication, and updated Bulhak's biography with
two images from it. |
An artist's relative |
Do I know any more about artist Eve Christene Buchanan (1911 - 1995)
than I have posted, and do I have any ideas about where a collection of her work might be placed? |
No, I didn't have any more information about the artist, but suggested
some ways in which finding a home for the collection might be accomplished. I updated the artist's
entry with information received from the relative. |
