Vancouver School of Art
Atelier Sketch Club
B.C. Society of Fine Arts (President 1961-62)

Jack Hambleton was born in Preston, Lancashire, England, and came to Vancouver in 1924 at the age of eight. He took night classes at the Vancouver School of Art from 1938 - 1939. He joined the Atelier Sketch Club, a group formed by art students taking Evening Classes at the Vancouver School of Art. The group put together an exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1940.

Hambleton exhibited in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1944, 1949-53, 1955-58, and 1968. During the war he was a Corporal in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

He exhibited in the Seattle Art Museum's annual Northwest Artists exhibitions in 1955 and 1961.

One of his paintings was used on the cover of the 1960 Vancouver telephone book. In 1949 he painted the demolition of the former Hotel Vancouver on Georgia at Granville. His painting Vancouver From Grouse Mountain was Number 223 in the 1958 "100 Years of B.C. Art" exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The painting was listed for sale at $150.00. Forty years later the painting came up for sale again in an estate auction, selling for little more than its original price.

Also, per card file at Vancouver Art Gallery Library:
B.C. Society of Fine Arts: 1951 through 1963.

He had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1963. In 1964 he moved to Kelowna, B.C., where he opened his own art gallery, also continuing to paint.

He died in 1988 while staying at a summer cottage on Sheridan Lake, near Lone Butte. He was married to Lorna Irene Nichol.
