He took art training and held a number of jobs until taking up the position of Head of the Art Department of the Technical Collegiate in Saskatoon. He held the position until his retirement in 1962.

He was active in a number of arts organizations, and exhibited two paintings with the Royal Canadian Academy in 1939 and 1945.

He married Brostrom von Degen (Bodil) in 1937, they were later divorced. She was his second wife, the first having refused to move to Canada with him.

In 1946 he took part in a duo exhibition with Illingworth Kerr, sponsored by the Federation of Canadian Artists, Regina Branch, held at the Vancouver Art Gallery from March 5 - 24, 1946. He was a founding member of the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1941, Founding Saskatchewan Regional Representative, and Founding Member of the group's Executive Council.
