He showed work in the 1943 and 1948 B.C. Artists exhibitions and in the 1944 British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Entry forms noted that he was living in Port Alberni.
He also had work in the Federation of Canadian Artists Third Traveling Exhibition in 1947.
In 1977 the artist was still living in Port Alberni. Macdonald noted that McVicar had been a pharmacist there since 1930.
McVicar died in Port Alberni in 1997 at the age of 91. His occupation was noted as "Pharmacist - Drug Store" at which he had worked for 45 years. He was married to Bertha Phillips at the time of his death.
