He was educated at the Vancouver School of Art from 1946-47. He graduated from UBC in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He exhibited artwork in the 1956 46th Annual exhibition of the B.C. Society of Artists, and again in 1957 and 1960.
He exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery in the BC Artists exhibitions in 1956 and 1958.
Gilbert died in Vancouver in 2005.
