Kathleen Shackleton

Kathleen Shackleton was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1884. She was the sister of noted Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. She emigrated to Canada in 1912, and lived in Montreal until returning to England in 1916. She later returned to Canada, again living in Montreal but also apparently traveling to the West Coast. She was primarily a portrait artist, and produced a large body of work of many different types of people, including labourers and authors, for example.

In 1931 she was living in Montreal. She exhibited five paintings with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts from 1931 to 1941. She exhibited extensively with the Art Association of Montreal from 1913 to 1915, 1927 to 1934, and 1941 and 1944.

SHACKLETON, Kathleen, M.E.
Born in Ireland, daughter of the late Dr. Henry Shackleton and sister of the noted English explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton; educated, Sydenham High School, London, England; studied art and journalism; has done numerous illustrations for books and magazines; illustrated first book "Sausy and All," written by her sister Helen Shackleton; was portrait artist and editor on Montreal Star; 1923 painted portraits of early Canadian settlers for the C.P.R.; spent four months travelling in the Arctic, painting portraits of the natives of Aklavik, N.W. Territories, commissioned by the Hudson's Bay Co.; 1927 painted 77 portraits of Northern Canadian Indians; has travelled extensively; Residence: London, England, and Vancouver Hotel, Vancouver, B.C.

She exhibited her work in the 1939 and 1940 B.C. Artists annual exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Shackleton died in London in 1961. There are extensive references available for Shackleton and her work on the Internet.
