He had work in the 1912 Annual Exhibition of the B.C. Society of Fine Arts.
McAdam was on a "List of Teachers appointed prior to January 1st, 1922" in the 1923 Vancouver School Board Annual Report. He qualified as a teacher in January 1912, listed as a Manual Training teacher.
McAdam was a neighbour of R.S. Sherman on Dundas Street in east Vancouver. Sherman and McAdam built their houses themselves c1913 from the same set of plans in a little competition to see who would end up with the best house. The winner of the competition is not currently known, but both houses still stood in excellent condition ninety years later, McAdam's at 3630 Dundas Street and Sherman's at 3642.
McAdam was listed as the architect for Sherman's house at 3642 Dundas Street, according to a City of Vancouver on-line registry of houses. A story from the neighbourhood was that McAdam was the inventor of the macadam road, which is not possible, although he may have been related to the inventor.
McAdam tutored Maud Sherman, the daughter of R.S. Sherman, after she left elementary school.
He continued to paint "until almost his death although nearly blind in later life" (Harper). McAdam died in Vancouver in 1946 at the age of 86. This date, from B.C. Vital Statistics on-line records, conflicts with the date of 1941 given in McMann's Biographical Index of Artists in Canada, which is no doubt based on Harper. McAdam is not listed in Artists in Canada (CHIN) on-line as of 2005. His occupation was noted as "Retired Manual Training Instructor."
