John (Jack) Wilfred Hardcastle

November 3 1882 - August 19 1973

groups

Jack W. Hardcastle was born at sea in 1882 on his father's brig "Martha" although his death certificate lists Whitby, England as his birthplace. He came to Canada in 1910, moved to BC in 1918, and to Nanaimo in 1929. He was married to Mabel Rebecca Drown.

He became a noted marine artist. At one time he was a rapid sketch artist for authors Jack London and Captain Frank T. Bullen (ref. Macdonald).

He had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1936.

There is a brief reference to Hardcastle in Harper, which gives Hardcastle's active dates as "1854 - 1882", which is erroneous, otherwise the information is apparently correct: "sailor who painted ships in w.c.".

Hardcastle died in Nanaimo in 1973 at the age of 90, he was survived by his wife. He had retired in 1950. His son Peter signed the death certificate.
