John (Jack) Wilfred Hardcastle

1881 - 1973

groups

Jack W. Hardcastle was born at sea on his father's brig "Martha." He moved to Nanaimo, BC, where he became a noted marine artist. At one time he was a rapid sketch artist for authors Jack London and Captain Frank T. Bullen (ref. Macdonald).

He had a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1936. He was living in Nanaimo, B.C. at the time.

There is a brief reference to Hardcastle in Harper, which gives active dates as "1854 - 1882", which seem erroneous, otherwise the information is apparently correct: "sailor who painted ships in w.c.".
