George Thane Fertig

December 6 1915 - September 23 1983

George Thane Fertig was born in Alberta in 1915, living in Edmonton until moving to Rossland with his family in 1926, then to Edmonton again, and then back to Rossland, Fruitvale, and Trail, B.C. He moved from Trail to Vancouver in 1941 after being "fired and run out of Trail for his union activities and labeled a Communist." In Vancouver he worked as an electrician while taking night school classes at the Vancouver School of Art.

He traveled to Mexico for three months after World War II and met with Mexican muralists, and later visited Toronto and New York. He was married on August 15, 1953 to Evelyn Mary Luxa, taking a trip to Seattle for the ceremony.

He exhibited paintings in the B.C. Artists Annual Exhibitions from 1943 to 1950. (refer also to THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE FERTIG for additional exhibition listings post-1950)

He exhibited one painting in the 1948 Stanley Park in Pictures exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Around 1952 he began working at Western Plywoods sawmill, where he met artists such as Peter Paul Ochs, and began to form a circle of artist friends that included sculptor , and painters Frank Molnar, LeRoy Jensen, and Jock Hearn. In the early 1960s Fertig quit work at the sawmill to dedicate himself full time to his artwork. He lived and painted in and around Vancouver with his family until his death after a heart attack in 1983.

He exhibited 23 works in a group show at the Surrey Art Gallery in 1979. The catalogue includes a list of his 23 works in the show and their prices.

A major biography of his life and work was published in 2010 by one of his daughters, Mona Fertig, who is also the founder of Mother Tongue Publishing Ltd., the book's publisher. The book is very well illustrated, with many full page colour plates that beautifully show her father's amazing art development over the course of his career as an artist.
