Walter John Douglas Duncalfe

September 11 1909 - January 1984

Atelier Sketch Club


Douglas Duncalfe was born in Victoria c1909. In 1937 he married Alison Elizabeth Fairlie, another artist, in Vancouver at Christ Church Cathedral. He was living on West Pender Street in Vancouver. The 1937 City Directory lists him as a Commercial Artist.

He exhibited work in a number of the B.C. Artists annual exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

He was a member of the Atelier Sketch Club, a group formed by art students taking Evening Classes at the Vancouver School of Art. The group put together exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1940 to at least 1949.

The 1940 City Directory lists him as artist, with "Eliz" living at 763 Nicola in Vancouver's West End.

In 1943 he was noted as living in San Francisco, California.

He later exhibited in the 1948 Annual Exhibition of the Atelier Sketch Club. He was listed as a Guest in the exhibition catalogue, his address given as "Vancouver and New York".

Duncalfe died in California in 1984.
