Muriel M. Barnes was born in Salford, Ontario. After her arrival in BC she exhibited artwork in the 1946 and 1947 annual B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

She had work in the Federation of Canadian Artists Third Traveling Exhibition in 1947.

She was living in Victoria, where she worked as a commercial artist for Eaton's Department Store. She died in Victoria at the age of 78. She was widowed at the time.
