Dorothy L. Chapman was born in Winnipeg MB. After attending art school in Toronto she and a friend bicycled across Canada, "sketching for their supper." After arriving in BC she exhibited in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1938 to 1949. She lived in Golden and Squamish.

She died in Vanouver in 2010.
