Helen Lougheed was born in New Westminster.

She was an early graduate from the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. The 1930-31 Prospectus for the art school listed Lougheed as passing First Year. She received her diploma in 1934.

The Spring 1936 edition of The Smock Pocket, the Vancouver School of Art Graduates' Association newsletter, noted that Lougheed was sharing a studio with Marion Erb Travers at 1203 7th Avenue. Erb was two years ahead of Lougheed at art school.

Lougheed married Lawrence Ross Stewart in Vancouver on November 6, 1936. Her occupation was noted as "Artist" on the marriage certificate.
