John Knoop was born in Russia. He moved to Victoria c1947, and later moved to Colwood. He was married to Vera Marnontoff.

He exhibited in the Seattle Art Museum's annual Northwest Artists exhibitions in 1947 and 1948. His residence was noted as Victoria in 1947, and Colwood in 1948.

He exhibited artwork in the 1948 annual B.C. Artists exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. He was living in Langford.

Knoop died in Victoria in 1959 at the age of 70. His occupation was noted as "Artist" from which he had retired in 1958 after 30 years.
