James Eldridge was born in England. In 1946 he was living in Victoria, employed by the Yarrow shipyards.

He exhibited artwork in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1945, 1946, and 1947. The artist was living in Sooke in 1977 when he died in Victoria General Hospital of a heart attack at the age of 82.

His death certificate notes that he was a commercial painter.
