He exhibited work in the 1939 Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, showing two photographic prints that were exhibited again later that year in the 1939 exhibition of photography by the Vancouver Photographic Society at the Vancouver Art Gallery. In 1940 Balkin was President of the Society.
The 1939 City Directory lists Jack Balkin living in Vancouver at 1949 Creelman with William Balkin, retired. Jack was employed as a salesman for Borden Co., whose product was canned milk.
Balkin died in Burnaby in 1982 at the age of 83, widowed. His occupation was listed as "photographer - photography."
