MOCK TURTLE

Original Relief Print issued April 2024

Image size 4" high by 6" wide (100 mm by 150 mm)

This is a somewhat imaginary turtle based on photographs that I've taken over the years of the painted turtles that live in Lost Lagoon, Stanley Park, Vancouver. They are most often seen on hot summer days, basking themselves on rocks or partly submerged logs in the lagoon. This image is actually a photograph of the first state of the print, a little more work has been done on the block since then, and edition printing has started but is not finished.

I tried doing a couple of trial proofs using an old tube of Daniel Smith acrylic printing ink that I got many years ago from McClain's in Portland. Surprisingly the ink is still good, and printed some nice solid areas without a problem. This type of ink has not been made for a number of years. I will probably alternate green and black ink in the edition.

The edition of 30 impressions is printed on Arches Text Wove paper 120 gsm made in France, from a design cut into artist-grade linoleum made in the Netherlands, using Japanese gouges. All impressions are hand printed by the artist with Caligo Safe Wash Furnace Carbon Black relief printing ink made in Wales, using an antique J. Smart copy press made in Canada. All impressions are titled, editioned, signed and dated by the artist in pencil. All are monogrammed in the plate. Some impressions will be hand-tinted.
