SOUTHERN SNAIL

Original Relief Print issued April 2024

Image size 4" high by 6" wide (100 mm by 150 mm)

This is from a photograph that I took of a small snail crawling across a wet boulder in Barclay Park, in the West End of Vancouver. I did a larger version from this photograph a few years ago, but wanted to try again using my current printing techniques. I created a pair of snails by mirroring one image before cutting the block. As a result, the shell on one snail spirals clockwise, and the shell on the other snail spirals counter-clockwise. I have imagined that this is due to the coriolis effect, and that one snail is from the northern hemisphere, and one is from the southern hemisphere.

The edition of 30 impressions is printed on Arches Text Wove paper 120 gsm made in France, from a design cut into artist-grade linoleum made in the Netherlands, using Japanese gouges. All impressions are hand printed by the artist with Caligo Safe Wash Furnace Carbon Black relief printing ink made in Wales, using an antique J. Smart copy press made in Canada. All impressions are titled, editioned, signed and dated by the artist in pencil. All are monogrammed in the plate.
