Leonard A. Woods was a pupil of Lionel Lemoine Fitzgerald at the Winnipeg School Art, where he also studied sculpture, graduating in 1940. Woods served in the RCAF during World War II, and was discharged in 1943. He trained at the Ontario College of Art under Emmanuel Hahn, where he graduated in 1945.

After that he was "selected to re-open the Sculpture Department at the Vancouver School of Art, a position he held until 1954." He was also the school historian until he retired in 1969.

He exhibited artwork in the B.C. Artists exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1946. The artist was living in Langley Prairie.
