Malcolm McLean was a member of the Atelier Sketch Club, a group formed by art students taking Evening Classes at the Vancouver School of Art. The group put together an exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1940.

McLean exhibited in the B.C. Artists exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1941, 1942 and 1944. He was in the military, holding the rank of Lance Corporal in 1941 and Private in 1944, according to exhibition records.
