William Gilbert Kinnis was born in Trail, and graduated from the Vancouver School of Art in 1944. He showed his work in the 1943 and 1944 B.C. Artists annual exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery. He was living in Vancouver in 1943.

He then moved to Montreal where he took further studies under Lismer and Tonnoncour. He exhibited with the Montreal Museum in 1950 and 1960. He showed work in Quebec until at least 1990.
