Ruby Johnston was an early graduate from the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts, receiving her diploma in Design and Decorative Arts in 1930.

The Spring 1936 edition of The Smock Pocket, the Vancouver School of Art Graduates' Association newsletter, noted that she "is now Mrs. Desmond Howard of Kamloops, having been married on June 26th, 1935. She will accompany her husband to Scotland early in the summer. He has accepted an appointment as exchange teacher there."
