August Hillgren was born in Norway, and came to Vancouver c1914. He was employed as a logger.

He exhibited work in the 1944 British Columbia At Work exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. His name was incorrectly listed as "O. Hillgren" in the exhibition catalogue.

Hillgren died in Vancouver in 1964 at the age of 83. He retired from the logging industry in 1951. He was single.
