Nancy Goldie was born in Kelowna. Ross was her mother's maiden name.

She was an early graduate from the Vancouver School of Art, receiving her diploma in 1938. In the 1936-37 school year she won a Mrs. B.T. Rogers Scholarship of $50.00, open to third year students. In 1938 she won the School Scholarship of $50.00, open to 1938 Graduates. She received a Post Graduate Endorsement in Drawing and Painting in 1939.

She married Peter McDonnell in Vancouver on October 25 1939. She was living at Okanagan Centre at the time, occupation "artist" and he was employed as a school teacher.
